Local Peeps: Jim and Barb

Jim and Barb are down to earth neighbors who are always willing to lend a hand. You might find them working tirelessly to raise money for the local EMS or preparing a banquet for the residents of the nearby senior housing complex. Genuine, caring, generous folks, Jim and Barb love their community, and it shows. I can always count on them to visit a ill friend, whip up dozens of cookies for a bake sale, find old chairs for our beautification project, or any other need the village may have... all without a wish for recognition. It is people like Jim and Barb that bring a community close with their kindness. Their benevolence is appreciated and deserves to be saluted.

Local Peeps: John and Mary

If you live in northern New York near the Canadian border, chances are that you know John and Mary. Long time educators at our local high school, they have been actively involved in the community for decades. John grew up in the village and knows just about everyone, or if he doesn't, it will take about four questions before a link can be made to someone he has a story about. They are supportive of their church, the golf course, the ice rink (which they helped bring to the area), our businesses, the school, but above all, they are always ready to lend a hand, celebrate an event, console a neighbor, organize a gathering. As my first friends in the area when we arrived thirty years ago, I can attest that John and Mary are down to earth people who appreciate their roots. They are generous in many ways, and we are fortunate to have them among us.

Local Peeps: Nicci and Tricia

Nicci and Tricia are the driving force behind most of the children's activities that have been held in the village for the past year and a half. Little did I realize ten to fifteen years ago that these sisters, students in my classes, would be working diligently with me on community events. They are creative and determined in their desire to host a myriad of fun learning adventures for our local kids. I am always impressed by their ideas and willingness to offer new experiences from planting seeds and making gifts for our senior citizens to offering a monthly story hour. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and their dedication to bettering our area is commendable. I own a huge thank you to Nicci and Tricia for their time and effort. Plus, they let me hang out with their sweet children which is a big bonus!

Local Peeps: Mary

Mary's friendly face greets all the visitors as they enter the village office. Although a newcomer to the village staff, Mary has quickly learned the job and is always ready to assist me with my requests and support my crazy ideas. Last summer she even came to help sell produce at the Farmers Market! In addition to her office skills, which I greatly value, Mary is a photographer, kayaker, a dedicated daughter, and a super mother. She is justly proud of her four children. Life's adventures have seen her move around a bit, but I am delighted that she returned to her home town. We all benefit from her spirit, her sense of humor, and her friendship.

Local Peeps: Caitrin

Happy Birthday to my daughter, Caitrin. Although she no longer lives in the area, she is a great example of the value of an upbringing in a rural setting. We may complain that there are few opportunities for the youth in our region, but when one takes full advantage of what is available, one can go far. As a cross country runner standout, Gold level figure skater, musician, and scholar, Caitrin participated in a variety of activities with her friends. A small community knows and supports its children, encouraging them to do their best, giving them roots and the confidence to spread their wings. We are proud of Caitrin, not only for her accomplishments, but also because she remains the sweet, caring person who grew up in Champlain and will always call it home.

Local Peeps: Mike

Mike is the Superintendent of Public Works and we are fortunate to have him work in the village. He is a jack of all trades: plumber, electrician, carpenter, backhoe operator, ... His skills are many, and he is not one who delegates readily. You are likely to see him in the middle of every project and repair doing as much labor as the rest of the crew. This winter with our average February high temperature around 7, he has been mighty busy with water pipe breaks. Hour after hour, Mike and the other DPW employees struggle to find and fix the break, working through several feet of frozen ground and gallons of frigid water flowing out. With wind chills sub zero, they persist. Mike is as dedicated an employee as they come. It is not unusual that he responds to concerns during off hours, and he always available for advice and assistance. He loves to talk; he'll make you laugh, but above all he is dependable and conscientious. We greatly appreciate his work ethic.

Local Peeps: Casey, Emily, Abby, Natalie, Jacqueline

Never underestimate the creativity and determination of a group of high school girls! The idea called Seeds For Change, was simple: I will give each group of Key Club students $5.00 directly from my wallet, and their challenge is to make it grow in a fun, legal way within two weeks. All the funds, including my startup donations, will be used to help a recent graduate with expenses as she undergoes treatment for brain cancer. This group of five- Casey, Emily, Abby, Natalie, and Jacqueline wasted no time in putting together a plan to organize a bake sale. Last night I received the news that they had raised over $200! I am proud and impressed by their effort. Let no one tell you that teens are self centered; these girls are an outstanding example of the many altruistic, kind adolescents who live among us. Kudos to all of them.

Local Peeps: Juanita

When I first met Juanita over ten years ago, I knew her as Ashley's mom, and that title has remained strong in my heart because she is the mother of a dear former student. However, in addition to her mothering duties, Juanita plays a strong role in our community, and I often go to her for information and support. She is the Village Clerk which means she keeps the books and budget in fine shape. She is patient with my questions as I learn the process of expenditures, collections, and all things financial. Juanita is active in the area particularly in the EMS, and is always ready to offer a hand when someone needs assistance. We jokingly say in small communities, that "everyone knows everyone", but the truth is that Juanita does know everyone, or at least, she knows their uncle or grandmother or their cousin twice removed...... This is important information when you are dealing with local needs, and Juanita is a valuable link to reaching out to others. She is a caring and generous friend and a conscientious employee. We are lucky to have Ashley's mom living here.

Local Peeps: Sheila

Our community is fortunate to have a beautiful senior housing development located next to banks, shopping, and the post office. These six large, white buildings, home to twenty four residents are managed by Sheila. Her ready smile always greets those who enter her office, and her bubbly nature is perfect for the job. Sheila has many roles in this position - friend, problem solver, family liaison, party planner, secretary, record keeper, and on and on. I am most impressed with her passion for helping the elderly. In today's society where youth and beauty are idolized and growing old, at least physically, is not acceptable, Sheila does her best to make certain these individuals are comfortable, appreciated, and involved. She works well with their personalities, organizes gatherings to suit their interests, and encourages them to stay active. Sheila realizes that these residents are a vital part of the community, and that their stories are the earlier chapters to the books that we are all writing as our lives move on. We are blessed to have Sheila as the advocate for our senior citizens.

Local Peeps: Beverly

Beverly is one of the liveliest octogenarians I have ever met! She teaches aquacize, practices yoga, reads avidly, and participates in numerous activities both here and in Quebec. She is my go-to person for all things historic in the village, having been born and raised here. Her family dates back to her great-grandfather's arrival in Champlain in 1871. She knows everyone and upon meeting someone her first statement is "You must be related to ...". Many residents will remember Beverly as the dental hygienist in the schools, when we had that kind of service. She has great stories to recount regarding her work with students. Most of all, Beverly is independent, forthright, and generous. She is a fantastic knitter and donates hats, mittens, and sweaters to people around the world. She taught me how to knit, and has introduced me to a world of music and crafts right across the border. I admire her spirit, enjoy her sense of humor, and value her friendship. Beverly epitomizes the solid people who settled Champlain.

Local Peeps: Erin

I've known Erin most of her life, and I have watched her develop into a hard-working, determined young woman. Although she doesn't live full time in Champlain anymore, she is able to spend plenty of time here, and is a fantastic supporter of local happenings. Many residents know Erin through her job at the local super market where she still works from time to time when she returns. Her positive nature and outgoing personality greet customer after customer at the checkout counter. Even the most curmudgeon of shoppers must return a brief smile when Erin speaks to them.
Beyond her working skills, Erin is as dedicated a friend as one could find. She keeps in touch through calls, texts, messages, and visits to maintain the rapport that can so easily crumble when people move away. She is polite, thoughtful and generous; our community is fortunate to have Erin continue to be part of it.

Local Peeps: Connor

Happy Birthday to Connor. The youngest of our children is turning 24 today, and although he no longer lives in this village, he will always be a Champlainer at heart. The sidewalks where he learned to ride a bike; the soccer field where he perfected the left footed kicks; the side yard rink where he spent hours practicing slap shots sometimes resulting in broken windows; the hundreds of glass items won at the dime toss; the daily walks with Tansy, and Birki, and Soleil around the "little" block and then finally the "big" block; the elementary school, now boarded up, where he learned to read and cipher .... a myriad of memories melded together have created an appreciation for this safe, caring community. We are proud that this shy little boy has developed into a confident, compassionate adult. With his love of travel, his education, and his professional goals, Connor will go far, but we know that deep down, Champlain will remain  his home.

Local Peeps: Merrill

Merrill is one of the ladies who taught me to knit last year, and through these lessons I have come to appreciate her tremendously. She is a mother, a grandmother, a retired teacher, an artist, and a friend; all these roles, among others, blend into a charming, funny, caring personality. As an educator, she worked with two of my children, and I credit her today with awakening their love of writing. In fact, we continue to call my daughter by one of the nicknames used in a story written by her brother in Merrill's class. Her students were "her kids" and she still refers to them as "my fifth graders"! Merrill's enthusiasm for village happenings is fabulous. In my moments of doubt whether an idea is viable, Merrill is encouraging and supportive. Her positive nature and open curiosity is refreshing; I am blessed to be buoyed by her optimism and spirit!

Local Peeps: Greg

There is no one in the Village of Champlain who cares more about this municipality than Mayor Greg Martin. During our dissolution discussion, Greg went door to door explaining to residents the advantages of this village. That vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the continued existence of the village. When there is a water main break, Greg will be right there along side the DPW crew helping in any way he can. Questions, concerns, complaints- Greg will be at your door seeking information to remedy the problem. He is a peacemaker, a communicator, and a leader who is dedicated to making Champlain a safe, healthy, and affordable place to live. We are fortunate to have him as our mayor. Take a moment to let him know that his service is appreciated.

Local Peeps: Kelly

An outing to the grocery store on this frigid January day was not something I was looking forward to this morning. The cart handle  numbed my fingers as I pushed it through the doors to begin shopping, and I wished I had brought my gloves along. But my attention quickly turned to the beautiful multi -colored flowers in the florist department; a rainbow splash at the height of winter warms the soul. The woman who was tending  them greeted me with a huge smile. This is Kelly, and she brightened my day with her positive nature. We agreed that a friendly glance, a greeting, a sincere "how are you" often is enough to let a fellow human know that they are important. She knows that her interaction with the customers may be the only kindness received that day. Thanks, Kelly, for being so personable and compassionate with the public!

Local Peeps January 14, 2015

"I want to know you moved and breathed in the same world as me." F. Scott Fitzgerald

I am borrowing an idea from a woman in Georgia who highlights a resident of her community each day to thank for their service, dedication, perseverance, personality, skill... She calls her posts Yousies, and I will name mine Peeps. I make no promises for daily paragraphs or weekly messages, but intend to write them as I come upon the many men and women who make our area a pleasant, caring, and interesting place to live. These individuals will not be perfect; I choose to see in each of them a quality that I value. You may know them differently, and while I respect your opinion, my words  will be positive because, all in all, I believe we should acknowledge the good people around us who contribute to our community. Comments and suggestions are always welcome.
