If you live in northern New York near the Canadian border, chances are that you know John and Mary. Long time educators at our local high school, they have been actively involved in the community for decades. John grew up in the village and knows just about everyone, or if he doesn't, it will take about four questions before a link can be made to someone he has a story about. They are supportive of their church, the golf course, the ice rink (which they helped bring to the area), our businesses, the school, but above all, they are always ready to lend a hand, celebrate an event, console a neighbor, organize a gathering. As my first friends in the area when we arrived thirty years ago, I can attest that John and Mary are down to earth people who appreciate their roots. They are generous in many ways, and we are fortunate to have them among us.
